GravitHy and CAP INGELEC sign EPC contract for the design and construction of the Electrical Substation for the Fos-sur-Mer Plant
A major milestone in the development of one of Europe’s first large-scale low-carbon iron production facilities.
GravitHy, a future producer of hydrogen-based low-carbon iron for the decarbonization of the European steel industry, and CAP INGELEC, an international engineering and construction group specializing in complex industrial projects, announce the signing of an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract covering the design and construction of the electrical substation that will supply power to GravitHy’s industrial site in Fos-sur-Mer, France.
A 1.15 GW, 400 kV/33kV GIS ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION TO POWER THE FUTURE LOW-CARBON IRON PLANT
This electrical infrastructure is a critical component of GravitHy’s industrial project. It will ensure the transmission and distribution of the electricity required to operate the site’s various facilities, including the electrolyzers dedicated to the production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, as well as the Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) production unit.
Under the contract, CAP INGELEC will deliver the full scope of engineering, procurement and construction services for the high-voltage substation, from the connection to the French transmission grid operator RTE’s 400 kV network through to the distribution of electricity at 33 kV across the site’s different industrial units.
With a total capacity of approximately 1.15 GW, the substation will notably supply power to the project’s electrolyzers, representing nearly 720 MW of installed capacity, as well as to all industrial infrastructure required to produce low-carbon iron.
A NEW STEP TOWARD FINAL INVESTMENT DECISION
The award of the electrical substation EPC contract marks an important milestone in GravitHy’s strategy to secure all critical infrastructure for its future industrial site. As electricity lies at the heart of its hydrogen-based low-carbon iron production model, this installation is an essential link in the project’s value chain.
The signing of the contract enables the launch of detailed engineering studies, the progressive securing of long-lead- time equipment, and the further consolidation of the project’s overall schedule in preparation for the Final Investment Decision (FID).
« The signing of this contract marks an important milestone in the development of our project in Fos – sur – Mer. The electrical substation is a critical infrastructure asset that will power our future industrial processes and enable the integration of large-scale electrolysis capacity on site. Thanks to CAP INGELEC’s expertise, we are taking another significant step forward in securing the conditions necessary for the successful execution of the project and advancing our preparation toward FID. »
José NOLDIN, CEO of GravitHy.
« We are proud to support GravitHy in delivering this strategic infrastructure, which will contribute to both industrial decarbonization and European industrial sovereignty. Our scope covers the design, procurement and construction of the 1.15 GW electrical substation, as well as the technical coordination required for its connection to the RTE transmission network. This project further strengthens our leadership in high-voltage substations and fu lly demonstrates our ability to deliver complex energy infrastructure that is critical to the success of tomorrow’s major industrial projects. »
Matthieu CALES, CEO of CAP INGELEC.
ABOUT GRAVITHY
Recognized as a Major National Interest Project by French government decree in 2024, GravitHy is a French industrial company producing low-carbon iron using low-carbon hydrogen and electricity.
